He is not able to travel back there as often as he would like and your photo's bring the town to his living room. :) ... You are very good with your camera! j. dubya Fire Pump Posted 6/14/2005 12:00:21 PM by Char In what year was the fire pump used? It is great to see photos of items that may have been there when my great, great, great grandfather, John T. Shipman lived in Aberdeen as a plantation overseer in 1850. He and his wife Charity Moon Shipman lived there at least from 1844 through 1862 when they finally came to Texas. While in Aberdeen they had Elizabeth Shipman born 1844, my great-great grandfather Charles Joseph Shipman born 1849, LC. Shipman b 1852, Mary Ella Shipman b. Jan 1854 and Martha Jane Shipman b. 1859. My great, great grandfather was hid in the Tombiggbee River when the Union Army came to the plantation. (His father was gone and the black "Mammie" that raised him hid him because he looked so tall for his young age and she was concerned they might arrest him as a Confederate soldier.) NEED A PICTURE(S) OF THIS BEAUTIFUL PLACE OF WORSHIP Picture of Shelaine Motel Posted 2/10/2006 6:50:59 PM by Shelaine Thompson Is there a picture of the new Shelaine Motel? I have seen the old sign. I sure hope it's changed. Posted 4/18/2006 10:09:26 AM by Bear I lived in Aberdeen back in the 70s, when I was in grade school. My most vivid memories are of the open hostility my white classmates showed to black kids, and myself. I had a couple black friends and remember all to well being surrounded by a bunch of racist talking white kids at the movie theatre calling me all sorts of names based on my friendships. Or let's not forget the high school kids that cut off my brother's car on a country road, beat on it with baseball bats, taunting him to get out, and all because their band had a drummer that was black. So, like I said, I sure hope it's changed. where is all the town houses Posted 11/30/2006 5:14:49 PM by shanta brown why dont you have no town houses or anything else . First Christian Church Posted 3/28/2007 12:52:31 PM by Jim I also wonder why there is not a picture of the beautiful old First Christian Church building on this page. home town Posted 3/28/2007 6:50:13 PM by Antonio Mason i live in aberdeen in i must say i love every minute of it family Posted 4/8/2007 9:30:59 AM by C.D. Walker My Great-Great Grandfather J.W. Walker saved Aberdeen from being burned during the Civil War by giving the Masonic distress signal to a Union Colonel. I'd love to visit Aberdeen someday, I drove through almost 20 years ago but didn't know the family connection back then. The old post office Posted 4/27/2007 7:24:25 PM by Diamond Diva I would love a picture of the old post office posted on this site. I remember thinking how HUGE it was when I was a little girl. I felt like a princess climbing the steps of my castle! Aberdeen was such a wonderful place to grow up. I share so many memories with my grandchildren of the field trips to the library, the lovely antebellum homes, going to the movies on Saturday mornings...so many things. Seems like only yesterday! Run Down Town Posted 11/28/2007 2:50:10 PM by Serfdad I grew up in Aberdeen in the 60's and 70's. Nice place to be FROM. Was a beautiful town now it is severly run down and depressed like many other towns in the area. Tough place to find any culture as well. Delighted visitor Posted 1/16/2008 5:31:05 AM by Fred Bull On a global journey to 30 communities named after my birthplace Aberdeen, Scotland, I have wonderful memories of Aberdeen Mississippi and its people. In my book about the worldwide Aberdeens I rate it as one I would love to revisit. unsung heroes Posted 1/18/2008 5:05:45 PM by ANDREA Byrd during the 18 and 1900's there were influential african americans in monroe county. Doctors, lawyers, teachers and craftsmen. Not everyone was a slave. I have moved to many different cities and states but none compare to the beauty and hospitality of Aberdeen. I do not plan on staying anywhere else but my "HOMETOWN" of Aberdeen, Mississippi. Going Nowhere Town Posted 6/19/2008 3:57:17 PM by Zeppy I grew up as kid in Aberdeen and left there in 1977. My childhood is full of racial unrest memories and closed mindness. My mom still lives there and I visit each year for a very short time (That is all I can stand) and I got to tell you it is severly run down and the people are very closed minded still. Not much culture there still and just not anything to do or be a part of that is worth telling. Lot a young people still on drugs because there is just not anything else there to offer. No white folks in the public school system either which makes it somewhat uncomfortable for the kids that are white that HAVE to go there. Same old people run the place so you got the same old story and opinions. Like the guy said above back in 2007... NICE PLACE TO BE FROM. Aberdeen is a going nowhere town that is almost dried up! No kidding, go see for yourself. Need more Posted 6/23/2008 12:40:01 AM by mimi I was born in Aberdeen, although I have never been a resident of the town. I think that the "old south" still exist in Aberdeen. I do feel that some are making efforts to make a change. The Park and Rec is currently providing day long camp for the youth and the basketball camp that is held every year develops positive team-work and leadership to it's participants. Aberdeen does have serious issues, although the town is beautiful and historic. It breaks my heart to see beautiful homes with historic delite sitting isolated in definite need of repair such as homes along the side of Long St and a home near Fred's Supersstore. Although my ancestors more than likely was enslaved by some of orginial owners of these homes, their beauty and grace intrigues me and I would definitely love to restore a antebellum home making it glorious once again. That's my dream and my passion. I think this website show showcase all the antebellum homes on this site. This would give the world a glimpse of the beauty that lies down the streets of my fair Aberdeen. going nowhere town
Posted 8/28/2008 1:51:59 PM by tomboy7 I know what you are saying is true because I used to live there. Its been 11yrs. since i lived there. My school years was hard on me there.I can remember 14years ago i was pregnant with my son and got married to my husband.I was told that i shouldnt finish school because i was married and had a baby on the way. i was also, told that i should just go to ged class. that i was setting the wrong example for other students, but i didnt drop out i finished school.I feel that it was always for the rich kids that got to get away with everything.I got along with whoever want to talk to me.I HATED being picked on all the time but look where i am today and where them people ar at now.
