About Aberdeen's History
In the mid-1800s, Aberdeen was the second largest city in Mississippi as well as the largest port on the Tombigbee River. Cotton was King in Mississippi in the 1850's and cotton from the rich lands surrounding Aberdeen was hauled there and shipped by boat to Mobile.

During this time of great prosperity, wealthy merchants and landowners who owned huge plantations nearby began competing to build large mansions inside city limits. As a result, you will find here fine examples of Greek Revival, Victorian, Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, and Italianate architecture.

Prior to the Civil War, Anderson C. Bean and his brother, Munford, owned an 11,000 acre plantation in Buena Vista, MS between Houston and Okolona. They may have lived for awhile in Aberdeen. Does anyone have info on this family?

There it is!
